The idea for a skateboarding apparel company emerged as a result of a need in Israel.
An Israeli woman living in the West Bank, living in an illegal settlement and unable to legally buy skates from shops in the occupied West Bank or Gaza, needed to find a way to make a living skateboarding.
So, she called on her husband, who works in a nearby factory.
She brought in a friend who also happened to be a skater, and they made a company together.
With the help of his friends, they set up shop in Israel and have been expanding ever since.
At the start, the pair was making a few skateboards for their customers.
But their customers became so demanding, the company went into full production and they now sell around 1,000 skateboards a week.
They also sell a wide range of other apparel, including shoes, bags, jackets, socks, t-shirts and more.
With their first product, a pair of high-tech roller skaters, the duo raised around $3,000 and they soon had a store in Jerusalem.
“We realized we needed a place to sell skateboards, so we built a shop and started a store,” said Moshe Yaron, a co-founder and CEO of the company.
“We also had a few partners who are now part of the team.”
The pair is now expanding in Israel, selling to various brands and in the United States.
“There are a lot of brands in Israel that are very popular and they’re very small,” Yaron said.
“If you can have a good customer base, that’s what you’re going to see in Israel.”
Yaron said that as a retailer, the team has not been paid as much as in the U.S. and that it’s still in the process of growing.
But, they are confident that it will be profitable, as they are already working with some of the top brands.
Ahead of its first shipment of skateboards to customers, Yaron and the rest of the founders were interviewed by The Jerusalem Times, who asked them to give us a brief rundown of the business model, why they decided to start it and what it takes to run it successfully.
What started as a skateboard company is now a clothing and accessories brand that sells skateboards and other products, including sneakers, bags and accessories, to skateboarders and others around the world.
How it started: Yarden and his friend started the company when they were both teenagers in Jerusalem in 2003.
Yardley’s brother, Moshe, worked in a factory, but they started thinking about making a business out of skateboarding after they came home from a weekend of skate boarding at their neighborhood skating rink in the Jordan Valley.
“The skating rink had a skate board and it was very cool and I started skating on it,” Yarden said.
“We had a friend and we decided to go to the skating rink and skate on it and we thought we could make a profit by selling the skateboards,” Yardley added.
The company’s logo and name are inspired by the Israeli skateboarding scene.
“I thought we’d sell the skateboard and make money, but it turns out we had to start a skate shop and then sell skateboard shoes,” Yarkon said.
During the winter, the brothers started a small skateboard store in the back of a bus station.
“When the buses stopped coming in, we stopped selling skateboards there because we were too busy selling skateboard bags and skateboard socks,” Yadin said.
The company now has about 300 skateboard customers in Israel who pay $1.50 a pair for skateboard gear.
For Yarden, the biggest difference between running the skate shop from home versus in a shop is the availability of skateboard accessories.
“You need to have the right skateboard to be able to sell your skateboard,” Yarmon said, adding that the company is working with several different skateboard brands to create a line of skate board accessories for sale in Israel as well.
When the shop first opened, the only skateboard accessory store in Israel was located in the central West Bank city of Ramallah, which is also home to the Israeli army and the Israeli embassy.
The shop also sells a number of skate park equipment and even some skateboard helmets.
“The shop was very expensive to start,” Yarnell said.
In 2013, Yarmen and Yarden started another shop in Jerusalem that was similar to the original shop, but also sold skateboards.
As the shop grew, the price of skate gear went up and Yarmons and Yashar had to change the shop’s name.
“Our customers have to be in a hurry,” Yasharis said.
He added that his business is now selling more than 1
