Skateboarding movies and women’s skate shoes have taken off over the past few years, with the popular skate brand Skate-O-Matic and the brand Nike leading the way.
Now, it seems the two are making a comeback.
In an interview with the Daily Beast, skateboarder Katey Sagal, who co-founded the Skateboarders’ Alliance in 2016, told the publication that Skateo has been able to bring in new women to skateboarding because of the “positive and positive vibes” from the new movies.
“The more people that see it, the more they’re going to want to get in and see what else we have,” she said.
The new SkateO-matic films have already been hitting theaters, with “Womens Skateboards” and “The Skate Project” both making their way to cinemas in January.
Sagal told the Daily Post that the films, which focus on skateboarding’s role in the film industry, were made with a feminist perspective and reflect the experiences of female skateboarders, including the struggles of navigating the industry.
“It’s the same story every single time, except now women have more representation and representation of the female perspective,” she told the outlet.
“We’re not just talking about skateboarding, but we’re also talking about other facets of life, like domestic violence and child abuse and all of that.
So that’s what we’re talking about, the experiences that we’ve had.”
In February, Skateos skateboard-inspired films, including “WOMEN SKELETONS,” hit theaters and won a best animated short Oscar for “Skipping Up The Mountain,” a skateboarding movie about a woman trying to live a normal life while skidding on an icy slope.
It won the Academy Award for best animated feature in 2018.
The Skate Club Skate movie “The Girl on the Skatingboard,” which won the best animation award at the 2017 Oscar ceremony, also stars Amy Adams, Taylor Kitsch, Nick Jonas, Emma Stone, and Zendaya.
“Wommens Skates” and Skateoole, which starred the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker and Vanessa Hudgens, have also been making waves in cinemas.
