source Reddit article “My mom and dad would always clean my skids before I went skating,” says Clearnose owner and skater Lisa Stilwell.
“My father would do the same thing every time I would come to a rink.”
That was until the end of her mom’s life when her son bought her a new set of skates that he bought at a thrift store for $50.
“They’re not very big, but they are pretty much the same size,” says Stilwe.
“I had a couple of them before my mom passed away, and they were really comfortable, so I thought it was a good idea to give them to my daughter, who is now 5.”
Stilwell, a mother of two, began making her own skate pads at home in 2010.
The pads are so light and comfortable, she says, that they can be used while you’re working on your commute or at home with your kids.
It’s the perfect pair for a new mother or someone who’s looking to cut down on their skates.
“I wanted a set that would be really light, so it wouldn’t be as bulky and heavy,” she says.
Stilwelins custom skates cost $80.
“That was a lot of money, and I needed something that I could wear in the summertime.”
In 2016, she and her husband, Brian Stil, started a skate shop called Clearnoose in the same building.
The couple began to sell pads online and started making regular deliveries to local skaters, who wanted them for their own personal use.
“There was a time when we didn’t really have an outlet for skate shops in the city, so we were kind of on our own,” Stilso says.
“We did start selling skates online but the customer base was pretty small.
We started doing a lot more of that ourselves.”
Over the next year, the couple started working on a custom product line that has since grown to include a variety of styles for every style of skater.
“You can get pretty close to the look of a custom skate,” Stils says.
A custom pad typically comes in a variety to match the shape of the skates and can range from $30 to $60 depending on the material and size.
Stilso’s pads can be customized to match your own shape and style, but you can also get a custom pad made to fit your exact skate shape, size, and skating style.
“A lot of times, when you go to a store and you’re looking for something specific, they’ll have a custom model, so if you’re a smaller skater, you can get something a little bigger,” Stiles says.
You can also customize your own pad to make sure it’s comfortable and holds up well.
“We’ve made custom pads for the big guys,” Stilo says.
“They look great on me, but I’ll definitely get a big pad made for a larger skater.”
