NEW YORK — Angel Skate, the skater-inspired footwear company started by a young skateboarder in the United States, has opened its first boutique in downtown New York.
The new shop, called AngelSkates, is located in the West Village at 34 East 42nd Street.
Its menu will be inspired by the “skater boy” aesthetic, which the company says is “inspired by skaters, the streetwear movement and the style of streetwear.”
The boutique, which opened Wednesday, will include skater shoes, skateboard apparel and accessories, as well as a selection of other skate accessories.
“We’ve been working on this idea for quite a while,” said Angel Skating CEO Joe Pappas.
“We’ve tried to build a brand that’s both a skate brand and also a lifestyle brand, and we’ve been able to accomplish both of those.”
Pappas said AngelSkate’s retail model is similar to a skate shop in that the skaters’ purchases go directly to the company.
“In terms of our retail model, we’re able to take these skaters and we put them in our store and we let them have their own space, and they can go shopping and they don’t have to pay anything,” Pappa said.
“They can buy the clothing that they want.”
The retail model allows the brand to keep a “cool” balance between its skateboarding brand and its lifestyle brand.
“I think there are a lot of skaters out there who are very much in love with skateboarding, and skateboarding has helped their life immensely,” Pattas said.
“If I were to take a look at how many of these people are in their 50s and 60s, they’re very much like us, they don,t need skateboarding to be happy.”
Pattas and his partners are building AngelSkations into an iconic skateboarding shop in the heart of New York City.
The shop is one of the first to open in the U.S. in more than a decade, and the first boutique to open on the West Side of Manhattan.
AngelSkaters was founded by Tyler Pappis, 22, who started skateboarding in the summer of 2012 after watching the MTV Video Music Awards.
Pappis said the company is “absolutely thrilled” to have its first store open.
“It’s just really awesome that AngelSkats has been a part of the city’s cultural scene for the past four years, and it’s just a great place to be,” Pittas said in a statement.
“People are really enjoying their own skate, and that’s what we want to be.”
Angel Skates is known for its skateboard accessories, including skater boots, skater style shoes and the brand’s skateboard-inspired clothing.
The shop is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week.
