The American public, I think, has been conditioned by the media to think of skateboarding as being a white dude’s sport.
I think there’s a real tension between the image skateboarding wants us to think and the reality that skateboarding really is a diverse and multicultural place.
I think the real challenge for us as a movement to make skateboarding accessible to people of color is to take that message to the next level and not just get our face painted.
We have to start talking about the way that skateboards are constructed, how skateboarding has always been a black- and-white issue, and how white people are a part of that construction.
If we do that, we’re going to have a much better chance of bringing about change and change in skateboarding.
